The cheapest full-featured mobile plan with 5G is currently Congstar Start from €11.90/month on the Vodafone network (24-month term). O2 follows from €12.95/month with its own network, 1&1 from €13.95/month on the Telekom network. All three offer unlimited calls and texts in Germany. If you want to stay flexible with no minimum term, you'll find options at O2 (O2 Free, no minimum term) and 1&1 (monthly cancellation possible). Congstar plans, on the other hand, run with a 24-month minimum term by default. Without a contract commitment, you're more flexible, but you generally pay a bit more per month.
For most users, 4G is completely sufficient for everyday use. 5G is worthwhile especially in cities, if you regularly transfer large files, stream 4K videos on mobile or care about low-ping gaming. In mountainous regions and rural areas, 5G is barely available yet — there, a 4G plan makes just as much sense.
As a guideline: 30 minutes of daily HD video streaming uses about 10–15 GB/month. If you mainly use social media, messaging and the occasional maps app, you'll get by fine with 5–10 GB . If you stream a lot on the go or often work without Wi-Fi, you should choose 25 GB or more, or an unlimited plan.
Telekom has the broadest area coverage, especially in mountainous regions and rural areas. O2 and Vodafone (Congstar, 1&1) are equally good in cities and metropolitan areas. For commuters and anyone who regularly travels to rural areas, it's worth checking the coverage map of the respective provider.
