Unlimited Calls Under €10: Are the Budget Plans Actually Any Good?

That's how much a complete unlimited-calls plan costs at WinSIM – calls and texts in all German networks, without limits, plus data allowance. For comparison: at Telekom, the plan range starts at €29.95. A factor of six. Which raises a question our readers keep asking us: can an unlimited-calls plan under €10 seriously be any good, or do you end up paying the difference back twice over – with bad network coverage, nasty clauses, hotline frustration?

The short answer: these plans are worth more than their price suggests. The long answer is still worthwhile, though, because there really are a few traps.

The field of budget plans in January 2026

A look at current prices shows how crowded the field under the €10 mark has become:

Notable: All these plans run on the same three or four networks as the expensive brands. Penny Mobil uses the Telekom network, Lidl Connect uses Vodafone's, Lycamobile, WinSIM, Aldi Talk, and Blau use the O2 network. There is no separate "budget network" with worse masts. The reputation of discount mobile service dates back to a time when the O2 network genuinely had gaps – that's quite a while ago now.

Where budget plans really save money

If the network is the same, where does the price difference come from? From three things.

Erstens von der Priorisierung. In stark ausgelasteten Funkzellen – Bahnhof zur Rushhour, Stadion, Silvesternacht – können Kunden der Premiumtarife bevorzugt behandelt werden. Im Alltag spürst du davon selten etwas, im Extremfall lädt dein Feed eben ein paar Sekunden länger. Zweitens von der maximalen Geschwindigkeit: Billigtarife sind oft auf 25 bis 50 Mbit/s gedeckelt, während Premiumkunden dreistellige Werte bekommen. Klingt dramatisch, ist es nicht – fürs Streamen in HD reichen etwa 5 Mbit/s. Drittens vom Service: keine Ladengeschäfte, schlankere Hotlines, vieles läuft nur per App. Wer gern einen Ansprechpartner aus Fleisch und Blut hat, wird hier nicht glücklich.

What budget plans do no longer mean, however: no compromise on modern technology. 5G has now arrived even under €10, eSIM is standard anyway, EU roaming is required by law and included everywhere. The four traps in the fine print

Now for the part the ad banners leave out. Four things you should check before signing up:

• Promotional price logic. The advertised price often only applies for an initial period. With Lycamobile, for example, the promotional price in the 24-month variant lasts six months, and in the no minimum term flex variant just a single month – after that, the regular price applies. Always calculate the total cost over 24 months, not the starting price times 24.
• Automatic data top-ups. Some plans automatically add extra chargeable data allowance once your GB is used up – often three times in a row. This option can almost always be turned off. Do that on day one.
• Activation fee. One-off activation fees of €10 to €20 are common and spoil the bill in the first year. There are regularly promotions where they're waived.
• No-minimum-term surcharge. The no minimum term version of the same plan often costs one or two euros more, or gets worse promotional terms. Flexibility is nice, but it comes at a price – decide consciously whether it's worth it to you.

None of these traps are illegal or even hidden. They're all listed in the price list. But they're the reason why two plans with the same advertised price can end up €50 apart over the year. Who is a plan under €10 enough for?

Honestly: for most people. If you use your phone for messaging, music, navigation, social media, and occasional streaming, and are on Wi-Fi at home and at the office, 5 to 15 GB will easily get you through the month. This is exactly the profile that budget plans serve perfectly.

There are three groups we'd rather recommend more to. Frequent train travelers who deal with full trains and changing cell towers daily benefit from premium plans with prioritization and from the Telekom network. People without a landline connection who use their phone as a hotspot replacement simply need more data than what's available under €10. And anyone who has to be reachable for work may appreciate the better support from the big brands – if the SIM acts up, "only reachable via app" suddenly becomes very concretely annoying.

And switching itself? It's easier than its reputation suggests. Number porting is legally guaranteed and, in almost all cases, free for you – many providers even pay a switching bonus of €10 to €25 for bringing your number along. You don't even have to cancel the old contract yourself; the new provider will take care of that for you on request. Honestly, in 2026 the biggest obstacle to saving money is no longer bureaucracy, but your own inertia.

Everyone else pays the premium brands mainly for a feeling. That's fine, of course. But you should know that it's a feeling, not a necessity.
