Cable internet slow in the evening? Here's what's really behind it

Sunday evening, just after 8pm, apartment building with a cable connection. The film starts, runs in crisp clarity for two minutes – and then it happens: the loading wheel. The resolution drops to potato quality, the video call with the in-laws freezes, and the speed test shows 38 Mbit. You've booked 250. Anyone with cable internet knows this evening curve. And no, you're not imagining it.

The phenomenon has a technical name and a simple explanation. Knowing both helps, because depending on what's causing it in your case, the way out looks completely different.

Shared medium: you're sharing the line with half the street

Cable internet runs over the old TV cable network, technically via the DOCSIS standard. And that has a quirk that never appears in the sales brochure: the bandwidth of a network segment is split among all connected households. Your home connection is on the same segment as dozens, sometimes hundreds, of neighbours – like a water pipe that everyone taps into at the same time. At 11am, when the street is at the office, you get full pressure. At 8:15pm, when everyone is streaming, gaming, and running cloud backups at once, the flow thins out.

DSL and fibre work differently: the line is largely yours alone all the way to the exchange or network node. That's why a 100 Mbit DSL connection doesn't slow down in the evening, while the nominally faster 500 Mbit cable connection next door grinds to a halt. Das erklärt ein Phänomen, das viele verwirrt: Der Speedtest im Download sieht noch passabel aus, aber die Videokonferenz stottert trotzdem, weil dein eigenes Bild nicht mehr flüssig hochgeladen wird. Wer abends regelmäßig Calls hat oder große Dateien in die Cloud schiebt, sollte beim Tarifvergleich deshalb zuerst auf die kleine Upload-Zahl schauen, nicht auf die große Download-Zahl im Werbebanner.

To be fair: network providers are aware of the problem and are working against it. DOCSIS 3.1 significantly increased the available bandwidth, and when a segment is chronically overloaded, it gets split – fewer households per segment, more speed for everyone. This so-called segmentation, however, doesn't happen on demand but according to the build-out plan. Until then, it stutters.

So why do providers sell 500 or 1000 Mbit plans at all, if they can't deliver that to everyone at once in the evening? Because they calculate based on statistical concurrency: not everyone is ever really online at full speed at the exact same second, so capacity gets overbooked – like airline tickets. Usually the bet pays off. In densely occupied segments it doesn't, and reliably so exactly when you notice it most. That's not fraud, but it's not a coincidence either. It's the business model.

What you should check yourself before blaming the provider

An honest interjection: not every sluggish evening connection is the shared medium at fault. Surprisingly often, the bottleneck is behind your own front door. So before you give the hotline a piece of your mind, a quick self-diagnosis is worthwhile:

  • Measure via LAN cable, not Wi-Fi. In the evening, all your neighbours' Wi-Fi networks are also broadcasting – especially in apartment buildings, the 2.4 GHz band turns into a real scrum during prime time. If the measurement at the cable shows full performance, your wireless network is the problem, not the connection.
  • Restart the router and check the modem's signal values. Sounds like hotline folklore, but it actually fixes some faults.
  • Measure multiple times, at different times of day. Measure once at 2pm and once at 8:30pm, documenting each time. Only this pattern – great during the day, collapsing in the evening – is the classic fingerprint of an overloaded segment.

If the pattern is confirmed, you actually have more leverage than just a grievance: if your connection regularly drops significantly below the contractually promised values, your right to a price reduction under § 57 TKG applies. And if nothing helps?

Then three realistic options remain. The first: put pressure on the provider. Ask specifically whether and when your segment will be expanded or split – the answer is surprisingly often more precise when a documented measurement log is attached. The second: switch connection type, if available. Where fibre is laid, the evening problem is off the table by design; even a solid DSL connection can improve the perceived quality, even if the number on paper is smaller. The third option sounds paradoxical: stick with cable, but deliberately. Wer vor allem tagsüber im Homeoffice arbeitet, allein wohnt oder in einem gut ausgebauten Gebiet lebt, bekommt hier schlicht das meiste Tempo fürs Geld. Das Shared-Medium-Risiko ist real, aber es trifft nicht jeden: In manchen Straßenzügen läuft Kabel auch um 21 Uhr wie ein Uhrwerk. Das Dumme ist nur – vorher weiß man es nicht. Deshalb unser pragmatischer Rat: Kabel ruhig ausprobieren, aber in den ersten Wochen der Mindestlaufzeit konsequent messen.
