Solving Wi-Fi problems: Why the router is usually to blame – not your provider
Bold claim to start with: your internet is probably faster than you think. What's stuttering, freezing, and buffering at home in most cases isn't your provider's line – it's your Wi-Fi. The wireless link between router and sofa is the weakest part of the entire chain, yet the provider almost always gets the blame. If you want to fix Wi-Fi problems, you should first look in your own hallway, not in the hotline queue.
How do we know this so precisely? Because it's measurable. And that's exactly where we start.
The 15-minute test: line or Wi-Fi?
Before you change anything, you need a clean diagnosis. Here's how: take a laptop, connect it directly to the router via LAN cable, turn off Wi-Fi on the device, and measure the speed – ideally with the desktop app from breitbandmessung.de, the official measurement tool of the Bundesnetzagentur (Federal Network Agency). Then run the same measurement again, this time over Wi-Fi, at the spot where you're having trouble. Bedroom, home office, balcony.
These two figures tell you everything. If the booked 100 Mbit/s arrives via cable, but only 12 in the bedroom, then you don't have an internet problem, but a Wi-Fi problem – and you can fix it yourself, free of charge. In practice, the test shows for the vast majority of households: the line delivers. So let's move on to the usual suspects.
The five most common Wi-Fi bottlenecks – and what helps
1. The router is in the wrong place
The classic. The router lives wherever the socket is: in the hallway cupboard, behind the TV, in the basement next to the fuse box. From a wireless perspective, that's about as smart as putting a lamp in a drawer. Wi-Fi likes to be central, elevated, and unobstructed – not behind reinforced concrete, not next to the microwave, not in a metal shelf. Just moving the router two metres can turn a one-bar annoyance into a fast network. If the socket is in an inconvenient spot, a longer cable between the socket and the router helps; it costs a few euros and often works wonders.
2. The device is too old
A router that has been blinking loyally in the hallway since 2017 broadcasts with the technology of back then – while your home today is full of devices that speak modern standards like Wi-Fi 6 or 7. Older-generation rental routers in particular are a silent bottleneck. 3. Wrong frequency band
Your Wi-Fi broadcasts on two bands. 2.4 GHz travels far and through walls but is slow and hopelessly overcrowded in apartment buildings – in the evenings, all the neighbours' networks, baby monitors, and Bluetooth devices are jostling for space there. 5 GHz is significantly faster and less crowded, but doesn't reach as far. Modern routers manage this automatically ("band steering"), older ones don't. It's worth checking the router interface: same name for both bands, automatic mode on – and for 2.4 GHz, manually select a less congested channel if needed.
4. A repeater in the wrong spot
Repeaters are great helpers and popular ways to make things worse at the same time. The mistake: many people place the repeater exactly where reception is bad. But there, it itself only receives junk – and passes junk on. The right spot is halfway between the router and the dead zone, where the signal is still good. For larger flats and houses, a mesh system is the cleaner solution; in new builds with network sockets, nothing beats a LAN cable to the access point anyway.
5. A single device is sabotaging everything
Wi-Fi is a shared medium: all devices talk in the same wireless space. An ancient tablet that only supports slow standards, or a constant downloader in the kids' room, can slow down the entire network. The router interface shows you which devices are connected and how much bandwidth each one is using. Banish old devices to the 2.4 GHz band, kick out anything unknown, and you're done.
Bonus: The balcony test for the warm season

Kein Wunder – zwischen Router und Balkon liegen meist eine Außenwand mit Dämmung und ein halbes Stockwerk, und moderne Wärmeschutzverglasung wirkt auf WLAN-Signale fast wie ein Spiegel. Bevor du in Technik investierst: Router-Position Richtung Balkon optimieren und testen, ob das 2,4-GHz-Band dort besser trägt als das schnelle 5-GHz-Band. Reicht das nicht, tut es oft ein einzelner Repeater am Fenster zur Balkonseite. Für Garten oder Terrasse im Haus ist ein Outdoor-Access-Point oder eine Powerline-Lösung mit WLAN-Steckdose die stabilere Wahl – Powerline nutzt die Stromleitung als Datenkabel und umgeht damit genau die Wände, an denen der Funk scheitert. Keine Wunderwaffe, aber für einzelne schwierige Ecken oft der pragmatischste Kompromiss.
When it actually is the provider
To be fair: real connection problems do exist, of course.
