PYUR cable internet from €19: Where the bargain price has its catch

Internet for 19 euros a month – you instinctively wait for the catch. There is one. But it's not where most people expect it.

PYUR, the consumer brand of Tele Columbus, is Germany's third-largest cable network provider – strongly represented in eastern Germany and in many major cities, from Berlin to Leipzig and Dresden to Hamburg. And PYUR has been running the same strategy for years: price. One thing upfront, for the record: PYUR is one of internet-deals.de's partners. That's exactly why we're looking twice as closely here – an ad copy helps neither you nor us.

The prices: aggressive, no question

First, the plain numbers, as of May 2026:

For context: 250 Mbit for €23 is a price the big providers can't match. Vodafone charges €29.99 for its 250 cable plan as part of a promotion, and comparable performance from Telekom costs noticeably more. Even the gigabit plan at €39 is less than what's charged elsewhere for half the speed. And the combo packages with TV and unlimited landline calls are fairly priced at a €7 surcharge – if you watch traditional TV anyway, you get a lot for your money here. One more word on availability, because with PYUR that's the first reality check: the network doesn't cover the whole of Germany uniformly, but rather its own cable footprint – for historical reasons, many eastern German cities and housing association properties, plus urban centres in the rest of the country. In some apartment buildings, the connection has long been sitting in the basement without the residents knowing, because the previous tenant never asked. So much for the upside. Now for the two points you should know before signing.

The honest part, number one: cable is a shared medium

Cable internet runs over DOCSIS, and that technically means: you share the bandwidth in your network segment with your neighbours. If you're streaming at 8pm in a densely connected apartment building while half of Germany does the same, you'll sometimes notice it – the booked 500 Mbit turns into more like 200, and latency spikes during online gaming. This isn't a PYUR quirk, but applies to every cable provider, Vodafone included. To be fair: how strong the effect is depends on the specific network segment. In modernised areas with properly sized segments, it often runs completely smoothly. And if you consistently get significantly less than contractually guaranteed, you're not without recourse – Section 57 TKG gives you a right to a reduction, and you can prove it using the desktop app from breitbandmessung.de. The honest part, number two: the promotional price is a promotional price

After the promo period, PYUR's plans rise to their regular prices, which range between €34.99 and €49.99 a month depending on the plan. That's still not a rip-off, but the gap to the teaser price is considerable – for the 50 Mbit plan, it goes from €19 to almost €35, nearly doubling.

Der Punkt ist, dass du den Durchschnittspreis kennen solltest, nicht nur die Zahl auf dem Werbebanner. What does that mean in practice? Since the end of 2021, contracts have been cancellable monthly after the minimum term. Our recommendation is therefore unromantic but effective: put the end of the promo period in your calendar, with a reminder four weeks beforehand. Then you decide fresh – stay and possibly negotiate the price (the customer retention team is surprisingly willing to talk) or switch. One small extra point: when it comes to the router, you can choose between a rental device and your own hardware. Your own FRITZ!Box with a cable modem costs more upfront, but pays off over the term and can usually simply do more – how free router choice works, we wrote about that in February.

Bottom line

A quick note on the practical side after ordering: if the building already has an active cable connection, activation often happens without a technician visit – just plug in the router, done. If someone does need to come, the usual time-window game applies; better not to schedule your morning too tightly. Overall, though, provisioning with cable runs noticeably faster than with a newly built fibre connection, often within one to two weeks.

PYUR isn't a premium provider and doesn't want to be one. It's the provider for people who look at value for money and can live with the quirks of cable technology. If PYUR is available at your address and you mainly stream, browse, and work from home, you get bandwidth for €23 to €29 that you'd pay noticeably more for elsewhere. That's a real argument, not marketing.
